Mark Caguioa was fined P20,000 by the PBA Commissioner’s Office for issuing statements on social media against officiating in the aftermath of Barangay Ginebra San Miguel’s 99-102 loss to the Alaska Aces last Sunday.
PBA Commissioner Chito Salud issued the fine after meeting with Caguioa Tuesday afternoon.
“Mark Caguioa was fined by the league the amount of P20,000 for tweeting and issuing statements to media critical of officiating and considered inimical to the interest of the PBA,” Salud said in a statement.
In his tweeter account Mark Caguioa@officialMC47, the Kings’ leading scorer tweeted: “… So pwede pala sa PBA yung travelling noh? Ksi d naman nila tinatawag on both teams eh…”
Caguioa, who turned in 16 points in that game, also told AKTV during an interview: “Makikita mo na parang bulag talaga dahil hindi nila nakita yung travelling ni (Alaska import) McKines nung hulki. Hindi nila nakita yun then hindi rin nikita yun foul….”
“…I suggest na kung hindi makikita ng mga referees yung ganun, I think we should add three more referees.”
The league has a policy on statements made by any person connected with any team, including players, that might be construed as detrimental to the paramount interest of the league.
As the leader of his ballclub and stalwart of the league, Salud said “Mr. Caguioa realized he should have ventilated his issues to the league office directly for proper remedial action which by rule and long-standing policy is the procedure that players, coaches and team officials must observe.” (DBC)
