FIBA Asia Championship: China settles for fifth place after win over Qatar

FIBA Asia/Nuki SabioChina defeated Qatar, 96-85, for fifth place to end its disappointing campaign in the FIBA Asia Championship on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The dethroned champions failed to dominate the game early, allowing Qatar to take a 21-20 lead at the end of the first period.

China found its rhythm in the second quarter, grabbing a 35-25 lead, before taking a 45-40 halftime edge.

The Chinese scored 13 unanswered point to start the third period for an 18-point cushion, 58-40, which the Qataris couldn’t recover from for the remainder of the game.

Guo Ailun led five China players in double digits with 21 points. Former NBA player Yi Jianlian scored 12 points, while Wang Zhizhi posted 13 points and 11 rebounds.

China, which was ousted by cross-strait rival Chinese Taipei in the quarterfinals, put up one of its most lackluster performances in history after leading the tournament with 15 gold medals.

Mansour Elhadary scored 23 points to lead Qatar, which finished at sixth place.
