JAY Washington exploded for career-highs of 30 points and five blocks as he led Globalport to a 113-106 overtime victory over Barangay Ginebra in the PBA Governors Cup and a first-ever quarterfinal appearance in its maiden season in the pro league.
The bearded Washington, traded to Globalport after two turbulent conferences with Petron this season, bounced back with a vengeance in the extra session after missing what could have been the game-winning shot at the end of regulation.
The Eckerd College alumnus scored six of the team’s 12 points in overtime, including two jumpers and a pair of crucial free throws against a Ginebra side that lost leader LA Tenorio on fouls late in regulation play.
“Let’s give credit where credit is due. Jay Washington came out of his shell. He has been struggling for the past four or five games, but he helped us a lot,” said Globalport coach Junel Baculi.
Also dishing off a huge game was Globalport’s starting playmaker Solomon Mercado, who scored 27 points and dished off eight assists, while import Markeith Cummings added 19 points, including a corner jumper with 56 seconds to play to seal the win.
The loss dropped Barangay Ginebra to 3-5, leaving the league’s most popular squad in a must-win game against Talk ‘N Text on Sunday as both squads fight for the eighth and final spot in the quarterfinals.
Globalport’s win also sealed Meralco’s spot as the third seed entering the quarterfinals.
The scores:
GlobalPort 113 - Washington 30, Mercado 27, Cummings 19, David 15, Miller 9, Taha 4, Nabong 4, Salvador 3, Lingganay 2.
Ginebra 106 - Lowhorn 41, Helterbrand 18, Tenorio 11, Caguioa 11, Ellis 8, Baracael 6, Maierhofer 6, Labagala 3, Mamaril 2, Urbiztondo 0, Wilson 0, Raymundo 0.
