A PROCEDURE done on his right eye on Friday morning left coach Junel Baculi with no choice but to wear shades while calling the shots for Globalport during its PBA Governors Cup game against Barangay Ginebra.
And he was the first to admit it’s a bit odd doing his thing on the sideline with his eyes covered with dark glasses.
“Idol ko si Randy Santiago, e,” he joked, referring to the popular singer known for wearing shades.
aTurning serious, the tough-talking coach explained he was told by his doctors to wear protective dark glasses after undergoing a minor eye procedure at the St. Luke’s Hospital the morning before the match.
“I had a procedure this morning and the doctor told me parang bawal matamaan ng liwanag,” he said after the game without elaborating what was wrong with his right eye. But he assured, “Minor lang naman.”
“Alam mo naman `yung ilaw sa Araneta masyadong maliwanag. Hindi rin naman puwedeng madilim. Nakakapanibago lang siyempre.”
Baculi was told to wear the shades all the time, even while driving his car.
“Kaya nga Randy Santiago tayo ngayon,” he said of the singer from the famed Santiago showbiz clan who ironically was his batchmate at La Salle in high school.
The man in shades, though, was mighty glad that Globalport finally saw the light at the end of the tunnel.
For the first time in franchise history, Globalport defeated Ginebra following a 113-106 overtime victory at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
And more importantly, the team is bound for its first playoff appearance after missing out in the first two conferences of the season.
Baculi indeed, has finally seen the light for the Batang Pier.
