Pingris, Nabong Out 2 Games; Devance 1 Game

pbaMark Pingris and Kelly Nabong were fined P60,000 and suspended for two games by the PBA Commissioner’s Office for their involvement in Wednesday’s brawl that marred the game between San Mig Coffee and Globalport.

PBA Commissiner Chito Salud announced his decision Friday, a day after meeting and hearing the side of all players involved in the melee that took place early in third quarter of the game eventually won by the Mixers, 102-88.

Also sanctioned heavily was San Mig Coffee forward Joe Devance, who was fined P30,000 and suspended for one game as repeated reviews clearly showed that his act of forcefully pushing GlobalPort’s Marvin Hayes after a double foul had been called on the latter and San Mig Coffee import Marqus Blakely actually triggered the commotion that led to the fight between Pingris and Nabong.

“Fighting will not be condoned by the league. There is absolutely no justification for our players to get involved in fistfights. Strong emphasis is being placed on this policy so much so that those who dare to trigger fights will be dealt with accordingly,” declared Salud.

Hayes likewise drew a P20,000 fine, equivalent to a flagrant foul penalty 2 for elbowing and kneeing Blakely on the floor after the foul had already been called.

“With this, it should be clear to everyone that instigators, hotheads and trouble makers have no place in the PBA and will be dealt with severely,” Salud said. “Instigators also deserved special mention specially those not even directly involved in the immediate action. They too will have to bear a heavy price for their act.”

The suspension of Pingris and Devance leaves the Mixers severely undermanned when they play Baragay Ginebra San Miguel on Sunday. The Batang Pier will also miss Nabong that day against the Barako Bull.

Salud stressed that PBA players have a responsibility to conduct themselves properly at all times.

“I want to remind our players that long after sanctions have been served, your overall conduct’s impression on our youth will continue to last .Be more circumspect in the future. Our players’ responsibility of role modeling, particularly to our youth, is sacrosanct in the PBA,” the commissioner added. (DBC)
