JOSEPH Yeo is hopeful about getting a fresh start in his PBA career as he debuts in an Air21 uniform on Friday in the Governors Cup at the Philsports Arena.
For so long buried deep in the Petron bench owing to a crowded two-guard rotation consisting of Fil-Ams Marcio Lassiter and Chris Lutz, and veteran Ronald Tubid, Yeo failed to get the playing minutes he needed to showcase his talent and skills.
But following the transfer to the Express in a deal that sent big man Mark Isip to the Boosters, the guard out of De La Salle is optimistic he’ll finally get the breaks he failed to get at Petron.
“I don’t know what to expect (with Air21), pero ako naman, whichever team I go, gusto ko mag-enjoy ng basketball,” Yeo told Spin.ph before his first practice with the Express on Thursday at the Gatorade Hoops Center in Mandaluyong.
“Kasi sa Petron, I don’t have the playing time, pero dito, sabi ni coach (Franz Pumaren), makakakuha ako ng playing time,” he added.
Yeo managed to play in just four games for the Boosters this conference, averaging 3.0 points and 1.0 rebound. His best game ironically came against Air21 on August 28 when he scored nine points in Petron's 112-86 victory at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Still, the 6-foot-1 Yeo, who will be reunited with his college coach at Air21, said he is grateful for the three-and-a-half seasons he spent with Petron.
It just so happened the 30-year-old cager said it was difficult to have playing time in the Boosters’ crowded guard rotation the past two seasons.
“Doon (sa Petron) as a player kasi you’re in a good organization, pero you don’t get to play. Mahirap din talaga ang feeling,” shared the soft-spoken Yeo, who is nicknamed 'The Ninja.'
