Apart from serving as a consultant for the Petron Blaze Boosters in the PBA, Todd Purves moonlights as a scout for the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies, evaluating prospects from the Asia Pacific region.
After watching the FIBA Asia Championship intently, Purves thinks we could see a Filipino player making his mark in the NBA.
“I think it’s only a matter of time before you see a Filipino player with size and athleticism who would transfer to the NBA because you have a pretty good size pool of players,” Purves told InterAKTV in an exclusive interview.
“I was blessed when I was exposed to the Gilas Pilipinas team and I can see the passion of the fans right away. It was overwhelming to see it in a wonderful way to see how much the people appreciated the effort and the hard work of the team.”
Purves said the Gilas stint in the World Cup would be a big opportunity for Filipino players to showcase their talent to the rest of the world.
“I’m so excited for them competing in the World Cup. I can assure you that during the world championship, there will be tons of NBA scouts there, including myself. Certainly, anytime you play at the stage that big in international competition, you have an opportunity to shine,” said Purves.
A new addition to the Petron Blaze coaching staff, Purves is enjoying being part of the Filipino basketball culture.
“It’s a very aggressive style,” said Purves. “It’s a passionate style, I love the intensity, not only the players, but also the crowd, the coaches. I’ve never been in a country where basketball was just woven into the fabric of the community. That’s the way here in the Philippines. I’m still in the process of learning the league and player tendencies and that kind of stuff.”
