Perhaps the most important person to the success of the Philippine national team is Manuel V. Pangilinan, the business mogul who also serves as president of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas.
Not only was he responsible for bankrolling the assembly and training of the Gilas Pilipinas national squad, he was also instrumental in the country’s hosting of the FIBA Asia Championship.
On Saturday, when Gilas won over South Korea to give the Philippines a ticket to the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain, Pangilinan was in the middle of the celebration.
“Masayang masaya. Happy for the team, happy for the country. Maraming salamat sa mga dumalo para sumuporta sa Gilas every other night,” he told InterAKTV.
After the game, Gilas coach Chot Reyes gave all the credit to Pangilinan for his support for the team, as did star forward Ranidel De Ocampo.
