‘May halong gigil’: Finally heathy, James Yap says eagerness led to struggle in first game back

PBA/Nuki SabioDespite feeling no more pain in his first game back on Wednesday night, San Mig Coffee Mixers star James Yap still struggled in his team’s loss to Rain or Shine to open the Governors’ Cup.

He shot a lethargic 1-of-14 from the field, finishing with just eight points.

Yap admitted that he was overeager after ending the last conference struggling with back injuries.

“May halong gigil ako kanina kasi ang sarap ng feeling. Ang sarap maglaro dahil wala kang nararamdaman, wala kang iniinda, masyado kang nai-excite,” Yap told InterAKTV in an exclusive interview.

Yap said he spent 26 days in Italy where he underwent treatment.

“Mayroon akong pinuntahang Olympic doctor sa Italy. Nakatulong ito sa akin, malaking bagay. Yung ginagawa niya sa akin, he’s moving my back. Nagta-tight kasi eh. I had 12 sessions with him. Tinutukan ko talaga. Nung pag-uwi ko, pinalakas pa lalo. Nag-undergo ako sa strengthening phase,” added Yap.

Happy to be back in tip-top condition, the two-time PBA Most Valuable Player vowed to play more patiently next time. He said that he has put in the work off the court with plyometric training, and he hopes that will translate into better performances.

“Nagpa-plyo rin ako. Condition-wise, masasabi ko conditioned ako. Pero na-excite lang masyado dahil wala ka nang iniinda. Sana tuloy-tuloy na,” he added.
