High-flying Barangay Ginebra San Miguel forward Japeth Aguilar suffered a knee injury in the first quarter of the Gin Kings’ duel on Friday night against Barako Bull.
Aguilar twisted his knee during a rebound play late in the first period. He was able to take two free throws after falling, but was subbed out during Ginebra’s next timeout.
“Inabangan ako ni (Mick) Pennisi and (Mike) Singletary. Medyo nahatak ako pababa, then mali yung landing ko. Yung weight ko papunta doon (sa tuhod) then yung right knee ko lang yung na-land ko,” Aguilar told InterAKTV.
“Wala akong naramdamang nag-snap. Pero parang na-feel ko yung joint na parang nagkiskisan.”
Aguilar said the initial diagnosis is a sprained medial collateral ligament injury
“Initial assessment is it might be MCL. This never happened to me before yung worst na nangyari is sprained ankle. Nung pag-land ko medyo na feel ko na parang papasok (knee) pero bigla kong binawi and tinanggal ko yung weight ko doon,” he said.
“Nung pagtayo ko parang tini-test ko. Sabi ko kay Coach (Ato Agustin) take ko na lang yung free throw so tinitingnan ko kung pwede pa ako makabalik. Pero advice sa akin i-rest ko na raw.”
Incidentally, Ginebra main man Mark Caguioa suffered a similar injury last March, causing him to miss a big chunk of the action in the Commissioner’s Cup.
Aguilar’s teammate at Gilas Pilipinas, Gary David, rushed to the Ginebra locker room after the injury. David said he suffered a similar injury last year, which would make it difficult for a player to move laterally.
