Gee Abanilla credits ‘powerhouse coaching staff’ for Petron winning streak

For coach Gee Abanilla, the streak is a testament not just to the strength of the Boosters’ roster, but also to the brain power in his coaching staff.

“A lot of people are saying we’re a powerhouse lineup, but for me aside from the players, we also have a powerhouse coaching staff,” Abanilla told InterAKTV in an exclusive interview.

“We have a lot of coaches with championship belts. If we could manage that, it wouldn’t be difficult because I’ve experienced it right from the start. People are telling me different suggestions, ideas. It’s really not difficult for me when I have to make a decision right on the spot.”

New faces in the Petron staff include consultant Todd Purves, who led the Indonesia Warriors to the ASEAN Basketball League title last season, and assistant coach Leo Austria, who did the same for the San Miguel Beermen this year. They are joined by Koy Banal, who won titles with Far Eastern University in the UAAP and the San Beda Red Lions in the NCAA.

Even team manager Siot Tanquingcen has PBA titles under his belt with Ginebra and San Miguel.

Longtime assistant Biboy Ravanes, who has won championships as an assistant to Chot Reyes and Ato Agustin, is also part of the team.

Abanilla, in his first stint as PBA coach, said the crew has found a way to work together.

“I think it’s just management of roles. Right now, we created system na kumbaga sinasala naming mabuti yung information in such a way na hindi naman ako maguguluhan. So far, it’s working,” said Abanilla.
