Because he leads the statistical race for the season’s Most Valuable Player, Alaska forward Calvin Abueva has a chance to become just the second rookie in PBA history after Benjie Paras to win the league’s top honor.
The former Shell center was a dominant force in his first season in the league, and he said the numbers were a big part of his MVP win.
“Mahirap namang magbuhat ng bangko, but when I won the rookie MVP I was also the leading offensive and defensive rebounder in the league. I was also leading in points and blocks. Yun lang,” Paras told InterAKTV in an exclusive interview.
But Paras said stats are only one part of the equation.
“Lahat ng involved sa voting dapat pleasing ka sa kanila,” said Paras, who will lead the latest batch of inductees into the league’s Hall of Fame this year.
“That’s because the votes and the players’ stats will add up together. So if your stats are equal with the other players, then that’s the time the votes will decide.”
The votes was a crucial factor in Paras’ MVP win over veteran Ramon Fernandez, who led San Miguel Beer to three titles that season, and sophomore forward Alvin Patrimonio, who also put up gaudy numbers for Purefoods.
Despite Abueva’s impressive numbers in the Philippine Cup and the Commissioner’s Cup, the fiery forward did not win the Best Player of the Conference award in each of those tournaments, after failing to garner enough votes from media and fellow players.
In an earlier interview with InterAKTV, Alaska coach Luigi Trillo admitted that his rookie standout will need to do a better job dealing with the media and fellow players.
