BARRING more weather delays, Alaska is set to finally make its Governors Cup debut on Friday when it plays against souped-up Globalport at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Aces, who reigned supreme in the Commissioner’s Cup three months ago with a 3-0 sweep of Barangay Ginebra, take on the Batang Pier (1-1) at 5:15 pm.
Alaska was supposed to play its first game of the conference on Wednesday versus Philippine Cup titlist Talk ’N Text, but the league had to cancel the day’s double-header due to typhoon Maring. The other game for Wednesday was supposed to be between San Mig Coffee and Globalport.
“More than anything, I’m more worried about our countrymen. It’s (situation) bad because Metro Manila was in a state of calamity,” Trillo said.
On the basketball side though, Trillo said the cancelation gave them some more time to prepare for Globalport, a team which he said is “heading towards the right direction.”
“They (Batang Pier) have more firepower now with Jay Washington there because he stretches the defense. Their import (Markeith Cummings) is a good fit for the team, who does a little of everything,” he added.
Globalport opened the conference in style, scoring a 101-94 thumping of Air21 before bowing to defending champion Rain or Shine on Saturday, 74-94, at the Ynares gym in Antipolo.
The 6’5” Cummings has been impressive during his first two games, leading the Batang Pier with 30 points, 12.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.0 block in 41 minutes of play.
Globalport coach Junel Baculi eased Gary David into the lineup and the 6’2” sweet-shooting guard logged in three points, three rebounds and an assist in 12 minutes off the bench.
David is coming off a stint with the Gilas Pilipinas stint, which earned a berth in next year’s Fiba World Cup with a runner-up finish in the Fiba-Asia men’s championships more than a week ago.
