Aching To Bounce Back

PBALosing some ground with a setback to Petron Blaze the last time, Rain or Shine looks to get going again and create distance from the rest of the field in tangling with Alaska in the PBA Governors’ Cup at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City Wednesday.

Coach Yeng Guiao is hopeful they can do well in their 7:30 p.m. showdown with Alaska than the last time where their training and rhythm were somehow affected by the inclement weather.

And Guiao said they have to really step up or be in trouble against the Aces.

Alaska is expected to come out determined after dropping its first game in the tourney versus the GlobalPort Batang Pier.

Rain or Shine came out cold in its first game after the storm, bowing to Petron, 84-99.

“Biglang lumamig at tumamlay,” rued Guiao after the loss that dragged them to a tie with Petron, GlobalPort and Barako Bull at 2-1.

More disappointed in their recent outing was Alaska coach Luigi Trillo.

“We missed 16 free throws and we missed 80 percent of our three-point shots. Most of our threes were good looks at the basket. We played an average game and we definitely can give a better effort,” Trillo said.

The Batang Pier actually also struggled with their shots but Gary David made a three-point shot that mattered, lifting GlobalPort past Alaska, 91-88.

Wendell McKines had a decent debut as Alaska import, coming through with 28 points and 13 rebounds.

He grabbed a big offensive rebound that set up Cyrus Baguio for a triple and tied the count at 88-all.

But David’s trey followed by a defensive gem by Jay Washington on Jayvee Casio allowed the Batang Pier to score their very first triumph against the Alaska franchise.

The Aces are raring to bounce back.

“We have to get going. We’re the only team not yet on the win column. And as everybody’s saying, it’s a short tourney,” said Trillo. (SB)
